Good Soil cultivation programme
Berner, a family-owned Finnish company, has launched the Good Soil cultivation programme, which reduces the environmental impact of potato and cereal farming and improves the yield potential of the field. The programme responds to customers' growing sustainability demands and is an important part of Finnamyl's raw material sourcing.
The programme combines the principles of regenerative farming, modern technology and Finnish farming expertise. The aim is to improve yield and quality, reduce environmental impact and support the long-term well-being of the soil.
For farmers, the programme will bring tangible benefits: a precise cropping plan, efficient use of organic fertilisers, crop rotation and precise plant protection solutions will improve soil and increase productivity. My Farm Wisu applications, weather stations and nutrient measurements support decision-making and reduce wasted resources.
Participation in the programme also brings financial benefits for farmers, such as a premium price for starch, small group training sessions to share practical tips and knowledge.

Circular economy at Finnamyl – efficient use of resources
Finnamyl's potato starch factory has evolved into a biorefinery that uses the potato in its entirety. The by-products of starch production - such as protein, fibre and fruit juice - are diverted to food, feed and fertiliser applications.
The water and heat energy used in the process is also recycled as efficiently as possible at the various stages of production. In this way, we ensure that resources are used responsibly and the environmental impact is reduced.
Commitment to the SBTI Climate Initiative
Finnamyl is committed to the international Science Based Targets (SBTi) climate initiative through its parent company Berner. SBTi has adopted the Group's science-based emission reduction targets, which also guide Finnamyl's climate work.
The aim is to reduce emissions by 2030:
- Scope 1 and 2: 42%
- Scope 3: 51.6% per million euros of added value (intensity target)
- Scope 3 FLAG (Forest, Land and Agriculture): 30.3%
The targets will be driven by concrete actions, such as the Good Soil cultivation programme, and progress will be monitored as part of the Group's Carbon Roadmap.
